First, I decided to upgrade my Directv to the HR20 so that I have one box for HD and DVR vs. the two separate boxes. I know I am asking for trouble as all I read on the web regarding this piece of equipment is negative.
So far I have had it for about 24 hrs and have had to reset it once already. This morning when I turned on the HR20 and my TV, I could get no picture or sound. It would pull up the DVR menu and grid, I could pull up the signal test and all was OK. Just no picture and no sound on any channel including the over-the-air channels. So hit reset, 5 long minutes later, all is working fine.
My only other issue is that I am not receiving my local channels via Directv, only over-the-air. I need to call them regarding - I just have not had the motivation to deal with support. I seem to call them all the time, and here I am on the "A List" (who isn't?) and go through all the steps I have already done before.
I still hate the user interface vs. TIVO. I think I may plug my old Directv Tivo back in to record standard definition television and only use the HR20 for the High-def stuff. I will use the HR20 longer before I decide this.
For those that are real GEEKs out there, you probably heard of this site; I had, but it has been a long time since I have visited and more stuff has been added. So if you are a Scifi nut, visit Jeff Russell's Starship Dimensions. If is cool.
Finally, can anyone send me a Joost invite?
After about 3 years, my Directv Tivo finally started to show it's age.
This particular TIVO supports 2 lines so I can record 2 shows and watch a 3rd at the same time. But recently, one of the lines went bad. Any show it tried to record ended up unwatchable. So I called Directv for a replacement. And of course, they no longer support the TIVO versions and now only support their own Directv DVR's, so that is what they sent.I have been using it for about a week, so am not an expert on all of the features, but wanted to share a few observations on the differences, and why I believe TIVO is still the leader in DVR usability.
Here are the things that I have noticed so far that cause me irritation.
- When fast forwarding through commercials and you select play to resume watching, the Directv DVR does not jump back a few seconds so that you start watching at the point you want. I loved this feature in my Directv TIVO. Thus, you must always rewind to begin viewing.
- When you rewind, it does jump back a few seconds so you do not need to rewind all the way to your preferred viewing spot. Why do this on rewind and not fast forward?? I always used this feature on fast forwarding and thus never would need it on rewinding. Directv has it backwards.
- Your list of recorded shows are can be two levels down instead of just showing each individual recording in a list. I know this is an option as a view on my TIVO Series 2 to show the list rolled up under each title, but I prefer to see each episode listed individually by the time recorded - an option the TIVO Series 2 allows you to choose, but one I have not found yet on the Directv DVR. If you know how, please let me know.
- There is no "Live TV" button on the remote.
- There is no "Delete" button on the remote to delete a recording show at any time.
- Although the Directv DVR allows you to schedule a show similar to TIVO's Season Pass, and it gives you to the option to record only first run or new episodes, it does not seem to work. It wants to record every episode even though I selected new episodes only.
Again, I have only been using it for about a week, so have not gotten into all the details of this DVR.
One of the features I do like better than my TIVO (Directv TIVO or TIVO Series 2) is the search function. It remembers you prior searches so you do not have to re-enter the search if you want to search again.
Another is the built in 30-second skip button.
I have not yet used the Bookmark feature, but that looks to be interesting.
So far, I miss my old Directv TIVO. I understand a lot has to do with what you are use to, but with the TIVO Series 2 in the other room, it will make it even harder to move to the Directv DVR fully. I promise to post a follow up regarding my saga in the future once I know the system inside and out.
Until then..... Have a wonderful NEW YEAR!
